Lukashenko gets sworn as leader of Belarus for seventh term
Lukashenko, who has led the country since 1994 following its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, emphasized Belarus’ achievements in sovereignty. In his speech, he reaffirmed his commitment to guiding the nation on a path of peace, unity, patriotism, and justice, describing Belarus as a “state for the people.”
He also noted the significance of taking the oath in a year marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, calling it a major responsibility. “We all swear an oath of faithful service to the Fatherland and will not allow anyone to erase our contributions to history,” he declared.
Lukashenko was officially declared the winner of the January 26 presidential election by the Central Election Commission, securing 86.82% of the vote. As per the constitution, the president must take the oath within two months of the election, in the presence of lawmakers, top judicial officials, and members of the Belarusian People’s Assembly. His latest term will run until 2030.
His reelection in 2020 led to mass protests and condemnation from Western governments, which accused him of electoral fraud—claims he dismissed as politically motivated. Lukashenko has also faced criticism over his governance, but in November last year, he acknowledged ruling under a “dictatorship,” describing it as one that ensures “stability, security, order, kindness, and hospitality.”
