EU Reconsiders Belarus Sanctions
This development was reported by a news outlet on Tuesday, which referenced sources within European diplomatic circles.
According to the publication, there are currently “tentative discussions in Brussels” surrounding the potential of providing Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko with “a way out of Moscow’s shadow.”
The news outlet also mentioned that US presidential envoy Keith Kellogg views Lukashenko as a possible intermediary in future negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Sanctions against Belarus were initially implemented by the EU in 2000, in response to alleged electoral manipulation and abuses of civil liberties.
The punitive measures were significantly escalated following the widespread demonstrations in Minsk in 2020, which were triggered by accusations of vote-rigging.
Lukashenko, who has held power in Belarus since 1994, has consistently accused Western nations of attempting to unseat him.
He has placed the blame on NATO for the deterioration of relations with Russia and the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.
In 2024, Belarus reinforced its military alliance with Russia by activating a joint defense agreement and allowing the stationing of Russian nuclear weapons on its territory.
In July, Lukashenko expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Western powers on “any topic,” asserting that the approach of “democratizing through sanctions” had proven ineffective.
