Lithuania Set to Resume Belarus Border Operations Sooner Than Expected
The Salcininkai-Benyakoni and Medininkai-Kamenny Log checkpoints, temporarily closed for over two weeks, are set to resume operations on Thursday.
Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovicius told a cabinet meeting that, based on the National Security Commission's decisions, the conditions that prompted the October 29 border restrictions “were no longer necessary to ensure domestic security.”
"It is therefore appropriate to lift the restrictions on crossing the border set out in the government resolution," he said.
Lithuania had shut the border with Belarus, with limited exceptions, on October 30 for a month in response to a civil aviation threat linked to smugglers’ balloons. The Salcininkai-Benyakoni checkpoint was completely closed, while traffic through Medininkai-Kamenny Log faced restrictions.
Following Poland’s reopening of two Belarus border checkpoints on Monday, Lithuanian and Belarusian border authorities conducted technical talks Tuesday addressing stranded Lithuanian trucks, smuggling, and migrant issues, media reported.
