Poland Dismisses Russian Claims in Moscow Attack on Intelligence Official
The head of Poland’s Military Counterintelligence Service, Brig. Gen. Jarosław Strożyk, rejected the allegations made by Russia’s Federal Security Service, describing them as “typical disinformation” designed primarily for a domestic audience, as stated by reports.
According to Russian officials, Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev, who serves as deputy chief of Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, was shot multiple times in Moscow on Feb. 6 and later hospitalized, while the assailant escaped.
Russian authorities later announced that a 66-year-old Ukrainian-born Russian national, Lyubomir Korba, had been extradited from Dubai and charged in connection with the shooting.
The FSB claimed the operation was directed by Ukrainian intelligence and alleged that Polish services were involved in recruiting the suspect. Russian media further reported that Korba’s son, identified as a Polish citizen residing in the southern city of Katowice, assisted in recruiting his father under the guidance of Polish intelligence.
Responding to the accusations, Strożyk dismissed suggestions that Poland was involved in assassinations or acts of sabotage in Russia or Belarus, saying such claims were fabricated to reinforce a narrative portraying Russia and Belarus as being under constant pressure from NATO and Western states, according to official statements.
He said the timing of the allegations may partly relate to the recent arrest in Warsaw of a suspected long-term Russian spy within Poland’s Defense Ministry, but stressed that the messaging was largely aimed at audiences inside Russia and Belarus.
Strożyk also condemned the spread of the claims by major international outlets, calling it “disturbing.”
He added that Poland’s intelligence agencies act in accordance with the law and are subject to political oversight by the country’s top leadership, including the prime minister and the president.
